Luke 1:1-25, Key Verse: 1:13

But the angel said to him: ‘Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to call him John.’”

  1. What things were fulfilled by the life of Jesus, and who witnessed these events? (1-2) What was Luke’s motivation in compiling his own gospel account? (3-4)

  2. What kind of priest was Zechariah? What shows the darkness of his times? (5) Why were Zechariah and Elizabeth called upright? (6) What was their life problem? (7) In what respects could this couple’s life of faith be considered a lamp burning in dark times?

  3. Describe Zechariah’s encounter with the angel Gabriel. What do the angel’s words reveal about Zechariah’s prayer life? (8-13)

  4. How would John’s life be unique? (14-15) What would make John great in God’s sight? (16-17)

  5. Why was Zechariah rebuked by the angel Gabriel? What could he learn from his time of being unable to speak? (18-22)

  6. Why do you think Elizabeth remained in seclusion after becoming pregnant? (23-24) What does her confession show about her faith? (25) Can you apply Zechariah and Elizabeth’s faith to any issue in your life?
